Good Disciples (Multiply)

I haven’t been very good at disciple making. I am just being very honest.

In the western church, we disciple people into more information, activity, events, and largely set a centre of gravity around a building. The ethos is “Come to the building, sit and learn”. We tend to disciple people into church attendance and conformity, not into the likeness of Jesus.

Out of this frustration I went on a search.

from about January 2024 to January 2025, roughly a year, we knew our Oasis group was misfiring and malfunctioning. It had become a comfortable food-fest, round table conversations, some scripture and testimony but passive. We had become an internally focused fellowship group. To the credit of some people in the group they invited others which has been wonderful, but still something serious was missing in our group. But I could not identify or name the problem.

via Discipleship.org in USA I learnt in 2024, despite thorough searching and enquiry, that there are NO known healthy Disciple Making Movements there, and the USA Church suffers from a lineage of “Barriers to Discipleship” which according to that organisation are:

  1. Time and Money – Making Disciples is more resource intensive than what leaders are willing to invest
  2. Prayer and Fasting – Most Churches hardly pray and rarely/never fast
  3. Obedience over Knowledge – Information consumption is valued more over that Obedience to Jesus’ words
  4. Community & Relationships – Most Church attenders have no time or inclination to develop deep, intimate, transparent and lasting relationship and tend to just “hide in the crowd”.
  5. Humility and Supernatural Faith – Many Churches are proud and work within the capacity of their human/earthly constraints meaning, there is no room for the Holy Spirit or New Testament supernatural gifts
  6. Outreach into the World – Most Churches are inward focused and rarely move into the world to evangelise.
  7. Perseverance and Sacrifice – Most Churches preach the “Gospel of Comfort” when in reality Jesus said “the world will hate you” and “you will suffer” which means the Church has no balls to Sacrifice or Persevere.

After searching the internet for about a year, I was hunting for a House Church multiplication movement to maybe learn from, but simply could not find anything.

In about February 2025 I found a guy named Knut Osland from Norway (www.welife.com), on Instagram, who has been building a Disciple Making network (and House Churches) for about 15+ years across Europe into Poland, Ukraine, Sweden and other countries. I heard his language and heard soundbites that resonated heavily with me to eventually help me draw the conclusion that this guy already “prophetically” knows what we are missing.

I reached out to him and “long story short” we went to a conference in Krakow Poland in July 2025 to meet him and his European team.

I will try to summarise some of the learnings from that encounter (the conference training sessions, plus conversations over meals, plus prayer, plus lots of wise advice…).

What we learnt and observed were several things.

  1. Focus on Disciple Making as a top priority (and vibrant House Church communities flow out of that faithful work) (MATT 28:18-20)
  2. Be WILLING and AVAILABLE to obey the Holy Spirit when he calls (2 COR 8:3)
  3. Fierce Obedience to, and Passion for the Word of God – “Eat the Word” resulting in huge faith, expectation of miracles, walking and functioning in spiritual gifts (EZE 3:1, REV 10:9)
  4. Strong Leadership but NOT lording it over people – like loving parents, or doting “Fathers/Dads” (1 COR 4:15, EPH 6:4)
  5. Deep Respect for Leadership – acknowledging that this is a supernatural Gift to the Body (ACTS 20:28, 1 COR 12:25
  6. Harvesting Teams – House Groups morphed into “Harvesting Teams” to go out into the marketplace, find new seekers and make new disciples (MATT 28:18-20)
  7. Training, Training, Training – It’s clear that this healthy and growing network places a HIGH emphasis and value on “training”, and I don’t just mean “more information” I mean training by example and by demonstration. What I call the “Hebrew Apprenticeship” way. (1 COR 2:4, 1 COR 9:25, 2 TIM 3:16, 2 TIM 4:2)
  8. Faith and Love Unfeigned – Paul writes about deep faith and affection between believers and we witnessed that in Krakow, for example, the way the Poland team served the rest of the network… but it was universal. It was like heaven on earth. Disciples from other countries had the same Kingdom mindset. (2 COR 6:6, 1 TIM 1:5, 2 TIM 1:5, 1 PETER 1:22)
  9. Apostolic/Prophetic guidance and input that’s mostly missing from most movements is alive, present and functioning in this movement (EPH 2:20)
  10. Replicate and birth JESUS in others, don’t replicate ourselves or our culture. (GAL 4:19)

For my wife and I, this 2025 European Conference called “Light Up Europe” was humbling, transforming and deeply healing.

So what else did we learn and what are we going to do going forward ?

Good question. But first some life changes for us to personally to navigate…

Firstly our working careers and lives are changing radically. We just sold our family home and bought a retirement house. Then, Cher’s cafe and catering business is being passed on to a new operator at the end of the year (this is where Oasis has been meeting). Thirdly my IT career comes to an end in November 2025, so we will be unemployed, idle, remote and cashed up… ready for whole new season in God.

Now changes to Oasis, in no particular order… (please excuse the mess as the Oasis group undergoes “renovation” work)…

  1. We will focus on TRAINING, Discipleship and one-on-one encouragement – to train, equip and release people into their God-given mission and destiny. Even if this means humbly and diligently working one-on-one. (2 TIM 3:16)
  2. We will focus on the depth of QUALITY and equipping and training so that those trained and released by us, are excellent, bold and lacking nothing. (1 THESS 4:12)
  3. Evangelism is at the front of our mission, but Salvation is NOT our aim. Discipling/Training into RIGHTEOUSNESS is our aim and special moments like Salvation and Water Baptism, Baptism of the Holy Spirit, The evidence of Speaking in Tongues, Healing, Deliverance, Working of Supernatural Gifts, Developing the Fruits of the Spirit, all become a natural part of the equipping journey. (2 TIM 3:16)
  4. RELATIONSHIPS are still a high priority for us, not meetings, liturgies or structures. (1 COR 1:10, EPH 4:16)
  5. We are going to be mobile, meaning we will “GO” as Jesus instructed. We won’t be “inviting” people to come to meetings, but we will go out, seek and find people of “peace”, train them in their environment and equip and release them to “GO” and do the same. (MATT 28:18-20)

We are right at the beginning of something new and incredible.

We are already making these changes in August 2025 and will continue to refine our mission going into 2026 as we “Eat the Word” and “Fast/Pray” in readiness for what God has in store for us all.

Some in the group are ready to follow us in this journey and others are not quite ready, but we bless them all just the same. Change takes time.

Are you ready to embark on God’s adventure for your life ? We would love to be your friends and help in any way we can for you to be successful on that incredible path for our life.
