House Churches can be known by other names, such as Fellowship, Gathering, Simple, Organic, Home, New Testament, etc. Some House Churches don’t even have names making them difficult to find using the internet, or can go by the vernacular.. “The Church at Marty’s House”, or “The Fellowship on Vine Street”. Searching the Directories
House Church locations, governance, denominational oversight (or not), government registered (ACNC, 501(c)3n(or not), beliefs, doctrine and leadership style can vary widely.
You might find our checklist useful to assess a new House Church that you are visiting, and discuss the themes in the list with the leaders of that group. Open and relaxed discussion on these matters (ie; transparency) is a good indicator.
Many house church directories are global and community‑run rather than official denominational listings. Many directories aggregate groups around the world, not just in one country.
Some directories (like HouseChurch.org) require enabling scripts to view the interactive search interface.
Perfectly healthy House Churches can move, shutdown and get new leaders, so change in the House Church space is very normal, as leaders are developed and launched out to plant new House Churches. A bit like kids maturing/growing up and leaving home, same principal, since House Churches are generally NOT tied to any real estate.
Availability and completeness of directories can vary widely. Some lists are user‑generated and the data may be very old, and not be fully up‑to‑date.
Still can’t find a House Church ??
If you cannot find one locally near you, pray about starting one at your place.
As a Christian you already have that mandate to share the Gospel and encourage others. Don’t be intimidated by “The Pharisee Mind”.
Start simple. Book a date, invite some friends over for a BBQ, Gather, eat and talk to them about what’s on your mind. See what the Holy Spirit has to say and just take small simple, practical steps forward. If they want to meet again, then something good is happening.
Success is about connection, encouragement and relationship… and long trusted Kingdom conversations about the Gospel and Jesus.
If this happens comfortably and naturally, a House Church is born.
