Good Japan

The penetration of the Gospel in Japan has been ineffective over the last 300 years or so. Westerners keep importing a fake and powerless Gospel pivoting around Money, Buildings, Clergy and Hierarchy… which produces little to no discipleship fruit in the west and should not be propagated in Japan either.

Western Christians are reluctant to follow Paul’s instructions in the New Testament, to embrace the simple concept of meeting in homes, eating together, teaching other and discussing the Gospel as equals. This pattern has been opposed by religious leaders and church attenders for almost 1700 years.

Japan faces two strong Gospel headwinds. The first challenge is the flawed misunderstanding and confusion of a false imported Gospel. The second challenge is embracing an accurate Gospel through the lens of a deeply rigid, historical and unique social Japanese structure. In this article we will explore both challenges.

CHALLENGE 1: A False Imported Gospel

Westerners are importing into Japan a false Gospel that is fixated around Money, Clergy, Hierarchy and a Building. None of these elements exist in the Gospel of the Kingdom that Jesus and Paul preached. They don’t exist in the Gospel.

Let’s quickly look at each of these issue which are prevalent in the western Church including Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Evangelical branches.

What does the Western Church reject from the Gospel ?

MONEY – The Gospel is free, and house church cost nothing.

MINISTRY – All believers perform all the ministry, including sharing the Gospel and Baptising new believers.

GOSPEL PRESENTATION – All believers learn and share the Gospel in their region, leading others to Christ.

HOMES – Believers met and gathered in homes, ate meals together, taught each other and prayed together.

CLERGY – The clergy/laity divide emerged in the Church of Pergamus about 50AD which has a technical name called “Nicolaitans”. Jesus hates it. Jesus says he is at war with it. It was industrialised by the Roman Church about 300AD and adopted by most denominations ever since. It perverts the priesthood of every believer. The Gospel sets us free of this religiosity and this divide.

BUILDINGS – There are no buildings or temples in the Gospel. This is a pagan, occult or Old Testament concept, but has no place in the New Covenant. We are called “Living Stones”. Jesus and the disciples never built one building, they built relationships, people and community.

HOLY SPIRIT POWER – The Holy Spirit, supernatural power, miracles and supernatural gifts are often rejected by the Western church. Without this input from the Holy Spirit the Church cannot even exist. Without the input from Holy Spirit the Gospel becomes an intellectual decision and Church becomes an entertainment gathering with gimmicks. This is what we see in the West, resulting in a prayerless, faithless, powerless, impotent Church.

In contrast, lets assume the Japanese Church embraces the New Testament way of gathering, evangelism and teaching. This will resolve the false imported Gospel.

Challenge 2: Twenty (20x) Unique Japanese Cultural Inhibitors to the Gospel

Strong Cultural Respect for Established Institutions – Japan values official, formal structures therefore churches in buildings may feel more legitimate and respectable. Japanese society can at times be hierarchical, and is also status conscious.

High Value on Privacy in the Home – Japanese homes are considered personal and private therefore inviting many people regularly can feel intrusive. Friendships and authentic relationships can help resolve this reluctance.

Small Living Spaces – Most Japanese homes and apartments are too small to comfortably host even 10–12 people. This is a challenge. Alternatives like Inns and cafes could be considered before meeting in homes.

Fear of Disturbing Neighbors – Noise and gatherings in a house or an apartment complex can easily cause complaints and tension with other neighbours. Japanese actively avoid this type of conflict. Alternatives like Inns and cafes could be considered before meeting in homes.

Group Harmony (Wa) Culture – Smaller house church groups might challenge hierarchy or conformity, which may initially cause discomfort. Friendships and authentic relationships can help resolve this discomfort.

Clergy-Centered Tradition – Like in the West, many churches, shrines and temples depend on trained clergy for teaching and ministry. Shared participation can be quite unusual for Japanese, and may feel uncomfortable at first.

Lack of Lay Leadership Training – Many believers do not feel equipped or confident to teach or shepherd without a trained pastor present. Leading others in Japan is a delicate social issue, not readily embraced in Japanese society. The Gospel encourages mutual participation.

Japanese Modesty and Deference – Many believers feel it would be prideful to lead a group or speak boldly in a house setting. Humility is considered a virtue in Japanese culture, even if it’s false humility to avoid conflict. Friendships and authentic relationships can help relax the gathering.

Christianity Already Seen as “Foreign” – Meeting in houses may feel even more suspicious, secretive, or culturally un-Japanese. Whilst this may be true, almost no westerners build New Testament House Church networks in Japan, so the concept is still relatively “unexplored” in a Japanese context.

Concern About Cult Associations – Japan has experienced high-profile cult incidents (e.g., Aum Shinrikyo), making small home gatherings appear suspicious to neighbours or authorities. This is a very big issue in contemporary Japan. The Gospel prohibits manipulation, domination and compulsion to give financially (which do occur in Western Church systems). These issues need to be highlighted to allay fears of cult-like practices.

Church Buildings Prove “Legitimacy” – A building communicates stability, permanence, and organizational credibility to society, even buildings have no credibility or relevance in the Gospel. The power of the Holy Spirit needs to provide the “legitimacy” that believers are looking for, not buildings.

Need to Avoid Social Embarrassment (Shame-Avoidance Culture) – A house gathering that fails or creates conflict may feel “shameful” in Japanese culture. This means creating authentic relationships and safe spaces is paramount, taking things slowly and comfortably, with due respect.

Christianity Is Numerically Small – With less than 1% of the population Christian, believers may feel safer gathering in larger centralized groups in buildings. Even if this gathering model is not really supported by the Gospel. We believe the “traditional building” model of Christianity in Japan has proven that it is ineffective. We would prefer to see attempts made to use the Gospel and House Church approach in Japan.

Missionary Influence Brought Western Models – Most Japanese churches were planted by Western missionaries who brought building-based church structures. Unfortunately these Western missionaries also brought denominationalism, other strange and false teachings which frankly have proven to be ineffective. We would prefer to see attempts made to use the Gospel and House Church approach in Japan.

Church Growth Strategy Depends on Public Visibility – Buildings serve as a public witness however house churches may feel invisible or hidden. The New Testament Church grew quickly by everyone sharing the Gospel and meeting in homes which challenges Japanese Christians to follow the Gospel pattern, not man made (Western) traditions.

Value on Formality and Order – Japanese culture prefers planned, structured, predictable gatherings unlike the open, spontaneous “spirit-led” style of New Testament house churches. This relaxed and hospitable way of gathering is new to Japanese Christians.

Social Barriers to Inviting People Into the Home – Hospitality can be seen as stressful and burdensome, especially for Japanese women responsible for hosting. This needs to be considered carefully, and possibly utilise alternate spaces like Inns and Cafes to gather initially before making invitations to the home.

Separation of Personal Life and Religious Life – Many Japanese prefer to keep faith activities outside the personal household sphere. The Gospel introduces a new way of living and sharing that Japanese may take time to learn.

Fear of Over-Commitment – Japanese life can be hectic. House churches require active participation and deeper relationships, which may feel overwhelming in Japan’s busy lifestyle. However, House churches can also be more relaxed and more flexible, meeting at different times, and convenient locations, with food and drinks, even beer and wine.

Concern About Conflict or Disagreement in Small Spaces – Japanese culture strongly avoids relational conflict at all levels of society. Close house church groups and relationships may increase the risk of disagreements surfacing. This can be difficult for Japanese to tolerate or navigate. This is where the Galatians “Fruit of the Spirit” is so important.

In Conclusion
結論

In summary, our research tells us that the New Testament House Church planting model, driven by the Gospel and one-on-one relationship based discipling has not been seriously embraced, or attempted, by many missionary groups in Japan. Our research tells us that the Japanese nation is largely untapped and ready to receive the Gospel, supported by an agile, inexpensive Church system that is in doctrinal alignment with Jesus and Paul’s instructions.
